Nancy Pelosi's Taiwan visit escalates tension between China and USA

China has repeatedly warned USA against Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, which it claims as its own territory

Nancy Patricia Pelosi is an American politician serving as the hounorable speaker of the United States House of Representatives since 2019

While there is no official announcements yet, local media in Taiwan reported that Nancy Pelosi will arrive in Taipei on 02nd August 2022 and become the highest-ranking elected U.S. official to visit Taiwan in more than 25 years

White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said "Put simply, there is no reason for Beijing to turn a potential visit consistent with long-standing U.S. policy into some sort of crisis or use it as a pretext to increase aggressive military activity in or around the Taiwan Strait"

Beijing sees official American contact with Taiwan as encouragement to make the island's decades-old de facto independence permanent, a step U.S. leaders say they don't support.

President Xi Jinping told US leader Joe Biden during a phone call last week that “whoever plays with fire will get burnt” in reference to Taiwan, which China regards as its territory.
